- When the client has animals in the home such as cats, dogs, birds, etc the APS specialist needs to contact known trusted family or neighbors to arrange for care of the animal in the home if they are willing and it is appropriate.
- Look for Veterinarian records and if found contact their office to see if they have animal boarding available. If so and the client has the resources to pay for boarding this can be an option also. Some local rescues will assist with boarding if they have a shelter.
- If the options listed above are not available, the APS specialist will need to ensure the animal has food and water at the home. The APS specialist will be responsible for the daily care of the animal until other arrangements can be made.
- When the client has livestock such as cows, horses, etc. the APS specialist needs to contact known trusted family or neighbors to arrange for care of the animals if they are willing and it is appropriate. Boarding of farm animals is usually not an option.
- If the option listed above is not available, the APS specialist will need to ensure the animals have food and water. The APS specialist will be responsible for the daily care of the animals until other arrangements can be made.
- Once the 180-day order is obtained APS has the authority to make all necessary decisions pertaining to all pets. This authority does not extend to livestock which usually have a monetary value to the client. Any action that would need to be taken regarding livestock should be staffed with your supervisor and your legal counsel.
