Freezing Financial Accounts

  1. Immediately upon receiving guardianship of a person’s Estate take a copy of the 72 Hour Order or the 30-Day Order to the client’s financial institution and request all accounts be frozen to not allow any debits.
  2. Request a Temporary Statement of all accounts. This is to verify the balance in the accounts the day the guardianship is granted.
  3. Request a copy of the signature card to verify all individuals on the account. Note-if it is a joint account the bank may not allow the account to be frozen.
  4. Upon receipt of additional orders continuing the guardianship, provide copy of order to the financial institution.
  5. If the account is a joint account and the client receives SSI/SSA income, contact SSA and request the SSI/SSA be suspended until the income is redirected to the placement or a temporary guardianship account.
