SLUMS is only to be used for people 60 and older.

The SLUMS has not been validated for those 59 years of age and under.

If there is a physical limitation (i.e., stroke, amputation, paralysis, etc.) that prevents the client from participating, the Exit 25 can be administered if a capacity tool is needed. Capacity can also be determined without a tool through the observation of the client and the interviews of the client and collaterals.

This is the recommended tool to use when justification is needed:

• to assume a guardianship,
• to terminate guardianship,
• if a guardianship may be contested,
• when the other tools are inconclusive, or
• when physicians, law enforcement, or other professionals disagree with our assessment of capacity.
